“A true design work must move people, convey emotions, bring back memories, surprise, and go against common thinking.” – ALBERTO ALESSI

Founded in 1921, Italian company Alessi has been at the forefront of product design, employing architects, designers and craftspeople from around the world that continue to create truly iconic designs of the modern age. Alessi, always been known for the high quality of its’ products, has evolved to become one of the leading “Factories of Italian design” capable of applying its expertise and excellence to many different product types.  Alessi has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area yet continues push against the desires of the general public. Alessi has been described as a “Dream Factory” which uses its products to make people’s dreams come true, by providing them with the art and poetry that they seek.

The Flat Cheese Grater is no exception. Apart from metalworking, woodworking is the other ancient and traditional production method in the area where Alessi has its roots: the Strona valley in northern Piedmont, Italy. So as not to lose this precious link with tradition, in 1988 Alessi acquired the oldest original company in the valley, Battista Piazza 1865. A number of historic objects, like this pear wood and stainless steel grater, from the early 20th century have been reissued.
